Viagra Connect is a form of the popular prescription drug sildenafil, a medication that helps improve blood flow to the heart and to other tissues. It has been available generically since 1998 and has been approved by the FDA.
Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, the maker of Viagra, is the maker of the brand name Pfizer’s popular acid-reflux pill Viagra Connect. The company’s patent for Viagra and its generic versions expires in June 2013.
Viagra and the generic versions of the two drugs have been available over the years to buy without a prescription, but they have faced criticism from medical professionals. Viagra has been associated with more than 2 million deaths per year in the United States, according to the NIH. Other studies have shown that it causes other symptoms, including blurry vision and chest pain, among other side effects.
“This is not a good move,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, a health care professional and frequent participant in the medical research community. “This is a bad move. It’s a bad idea.”
Laurence H. Whyte, a professor of medicine at the University of Michigan College of Veterinary Medicine, and his colleague Charles M. Kvey, an epidemiologist, said they believed the move was a “bad move” and recommended Pfizer stop selling the drugs.
“There are plenty of reasons to pull the trigger,” Wolfe said. “There’s no need for a whole new drug every day.”
Viagra is a PDE5 inhibitor. It relaxes the blood vessels in the penis, which helps blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. Sildenafil relaxes the blood vessels in the penis, which helps to treat symptoms of angina.
Pfizer said Viagra Connect is effective for up to 36 hours. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, but not to the heart.
Viagra was the first drug approved by the FDA to treat angina. It is available in pill form and in the form of a chewable tablet.
Viagra Connect is available in the U. S. in three strengths: 50 milligrams, 100 milligrams, and 200 milligrams. It is available in tablet form.
